Does FSA cover GLP-1 medications?

GLP-1 medications (such as semaglutide and tirzepatide) are prescription drugs, and IRS Publication 502 counts prescribed medicine to treat a disease as a qualified expense. When a GLP-1 is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, it's clearly eligible.
For weight management, the rule is narrower. Publication 502 allows weight-loss treatment as a medical expense only when it treats a specific disease diagnosed by a physician — such as obesity or another condition like hypertension or heart disease. Weight loss to improve general health or appearance is not a qualified expense.
Because the same drug can be medical or non-qualified depending on why it's prescribed, FSA administrators often ask for a diagnosis or a Letter of Medical Necessity for weight-loss use. A valid prescription tied to a diagnosed condition is the deciding factor.
