Does an FSA cover multivitamins?
Daily multivitamins taken for general health aren't FSA-eligible — the IRS only allows a vitamin or supplement when a provider recommends it to treat a specific diagnosed condition.
What flips the answer
- Covered when
A provider recommends the vitamin to treat a specific diagnosed condition (e.g., a diagnosed deficiency), documented with a Letter of Medical Necessity.
- Not covered when
The multivitamin is taken for general health, wellness, or preventive support without a diagnosed condition.
IRS Publication 502 states you generally can't include the cost of vitamins or supplements taken to maintain general health. A daily multivitamin falls squarely in that category, so an FSA won't reimburse it by default.
The exception is when a vitamin is recommended by a medical practitioner as treatment for a specific medical condition diagnosed by a physician — for example, prenatal vitamins during pregnancy or a vitamin prescribed to correct a diagnosed deficiency. A Letter of Medical Necessity documents that use.
General wellness, immune support, or preventive supplementation isn't enough. The vitamin must be treating a diagnosed condition, not maintaining overall health, to qualify.
