Does HSA cover prescription sunglasses?
Prescription sunglasses are a qualified HSA expense because they're vision-correcting prescription eyewear — but plain non-prescription sunglasses are not.
What flips the answer
- Covered when
The sunglasses carry a corrective prescription, making them eligible prescription eyewear.
- Not covered when
The sunglasses are non-prescription — without vision correction they're a personal item, not medical care.
- Not covered when
The cost was already reimbursed by a vision plan — you can't also pay it from the HSA.
IRS Publication 502 counts eyeglasses needed to correct vision as qualified medical care. Prescription sunglasses do exactly that, so they're HSA-eligible and can be paid for with pre-tax dollars.
What matters is the corrective prescription. Non-prescription sunglasses only shade your eyes and are treated as a personal item, so they don't qualify even with strong UV protection.
The related vision expenses generally qualify as well — the eye exam that yields the prescription, plus prescription glasses and contact lenses. Unlike an FSA, an HSA balance rolls over year to year, so there's no deadline to spend it.
