You have diabetes or kidney disease (or a recent transplant) and get Medical Nutrition Therapy from a registered dietitian with a referral — covered by Medicare.

Medicare covers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) when it's provided by a registered dietitian or qualified nutrition professional and you have diabetes, kidney disease, or have had a kidney transplant within the last 36 months, with a doctor's referral. In those cases it's a defined covered benefit.
On ACA-compliant private plans, obesity screening and behavioral counseling, and diet counseling for adults at higher risk of chronic disease, are preventive services that must be covered with no cost-sharing when delivered in-network. That's the route through which many people get covered nutrition counseling.
Outside those lanes, coverage is inconsistent. General nutrition or weight-management advice with no qualifying diagnosis or preventive basis is often not covered, and plans distinguish between a registered dietitian and other 'nutritionist' titles.
