Does health insurance cover acupuncture?
Acupuncture is not one of the ACA's required essential health benefits, so private plans cover it inconsistently — but Medicare and some plans do pay for it specifically to treat chronic low back pain.

The ten essential health benefits that ACA marketplace and most employer plans must cover do not include acupuncture as a stand-alone category. Whether your plan pays for it comes down to the individual plan's benefit design and, in some cases, which state's benchmark plan it follows.
Medicare Part B does cover acupuncture, but only for chronic low back pain — up to a limited number of sessions, delivered by an approved provider, after a course that hasn't resolved. It does not cover acupuncture for other conditions like headaches, nausea, or general pain.
Many private plans that do include acupuncture treat it as a limited benefit: a capped number of visits per year, a requirement that a covered diagnosis justify it, or coverage only through in-network licensed acupuncturists. Wellness or 'maintenance' acupuncture without a medical diagnosis is commonly excluded.
