Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes. When it's prescribed for diabetes and your Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plan lists it on its formulary, it can be covered — often subject to prior authorization or step therapy.
By statute, Medicare drug plans are prohibited from covering any drug used for weight loss. So if the same molecule is prescribed for obesity, Medicare won't pay. (Its sister drug Zepbound is the weight-loss version of tirzepatide and is not a Medicare-covered use.)
